Q. Yesterday was Ipchun, the traditional beginning of spring. We’re starting spring together with you, Soobin. How did you spend this winter?
This winter was said to be especially cold, but I was so busy meeting MOA around the world that I barely had time to notice it. I was also in warmer countries, and being surrounded by MOA’s love made it feel like the warmest winter I’ve ever had. (laughs)
Q. Then what kind of spring are you looking forward to?
I want this spring to be about giving back the love to MOA who made my winter feel so warm.
Q. How do you plan to do that?
Honestly, there’s only so much I can do. I can’t do anything huge, but I try to show it in small ways even now. For example, I try to communicate with MOA at least once a day, and I make sure to take at least one photo every day so I can send them selfies.
Q. That’s very sweet! (laughs) Watching you, I always thought you must be a very warm person. What do you think?
To the people who are truly close to me and precious to me, I’m endlessly warm. But if I ask myself, “How warm of a person am I?” honestly, I’m not sure. Something I hear a lot is, “You’re not an F, you’re a T, right? Take the MBTI test again!” I can actually be a bit indifferent toward people. But when someone feels like “my person,” I think I’m really warm toward them.
Q. Then how can someone become close to you?
They have to annoy me a lot. (laughs) Even if I’m bad at replying, they should keep messaging me. Even if I don’t want to go out, they should keep asking me to come out.
Q. So they have to keep knocking on the door?
Yes, exactly.
Q. Then when you want to get closer to someone else, do you do the same thing?
Yes, if I feel like I want to become friends with someone, I think I put in a lot of effort. But honestly, the fastest way to get close is probably to share a common hobby. All of my close friends watch anime and play the same games as I do.
Q. Do you ever feel like meeting completely new people?
About four years ago I started making a new bucket list, and I’ve accomplished most of the things on it. There’s just one thing I haven’t done yet: staying at a guesthouse. Not as Soobin from TOMORROW X TOGETHER, but as Choi Soobin the person. I’ve always wanted to meet strangers and spend time with them. Like traveling to a guesthouse and living together with people I’ve never met for a few days. But I haven’t tried it yet.
Q. How was today’s photoshoot for you?
To be honest, I’m not someone who feels extremely confident doing photoshoots. I tend to be a bit cautious. But you were smiling the whole time in front of me, so I thought you must be someone who smiles a lot.
Q. I was smiling because I genuinely loved it. The Soobin I imagined wearing Gucci in outer space was right in front of me.
Thank you. (laughs)
Q. So how was today’s photoshoot with the space concept?
I think the most important thing about a photoshoot is that it should be fun to look at. Today there were so many different sets and colorful lights that even without doing big acting, it already felt visually interesting. So I felt less pressure and was able to shoot comfortably.
Q. I was curious about Soobin’s universe. What would it be made of?
Love. Love for the members, my family, my friends, MOA, and even my pets. I believe everything in this world runs on love. The reason I work, and even the reason I can rest, is because I love someone. So I think my universe is made of love.
Q. That’s a very romantic universe. If you had to compare yourself to a planet, which one would you be?
I think I’m a very multi-dimensional person. My personality changes a lot depending on where I am and who I’m with. Among the planets in the solar system, Earth feels the most multi-layered. It holds water, air, land, and many different elements. So I think I’m like Earth.
Q. I feel like you must have a kind of gravity that draws people toward you.
Maybe it’s transparency and honesty. I’m the type whose feelings show very easily. I once had a New Year’s party with friends, and I planned a surprise event where I dressed as Santa and brought gifts for them. I prepared it very secretly and dramatically, but as soon as they saw me they said, “What did you prepare? Open your bag.” They said they could tell immediately. They told me that obviousness was actually my charm. Seeing their reaction made me think, “Maybe that really is my charm.”
Q. It sounds like you’re not very good at lying.
If I don’t like something, I say I don’t like it. But when I’m forced into a situation where I have to lie, it becomes really obvious. I’m very honest with my emotions.
Q. Then I’ll ask expecting an honest answer. Do you enjoy working a lot, or do you prefer resting?
Honestly, I like both. Sometimes I want to rest because my schedule is so busy, but in the long run, of course I prefer working. When I work hard, I become even more grateful for rest afterward.
Q. Are you a workaholic?
No. (laughs) I’m actually the type who prefers to take things at a relaxed pace. But since I’m part of a group, if even one member has strong passion, I can follow that energy. When someone next to me is burning with passion, it motivates me too.
Q. You started the year very busy again, and your tour is nearing its end. When you see MOA, what feeling comes to you first?
It may sound cliché, but I just feel grateful. MOA may already know this, but I used to have pretty low self-esteem. Now, thanks to MOA, I feel proud of myself and feel like I’m becoming a better person.
For example, my nose used to be a bit of a complex for me. The tip is round and a little flat. But MOA told me they really liked my nose. Now if someone asks me, “What’s your favorite feature on your face?” I can confidently say my nose. The part of myself I used to shrink away from and dislike has become something I’m proud of. Being loved and complimented really changes you.
Q. It sounds like you truly felt the power of love.
I don’t remember the exact words, but once during a live broadcast I said something like, “All noise can be covered by love.” MOA really liked that line. I think there’s so much noise in the world, but love is what helps us overcome it and keep moving forward.
Q. With that power of love, what kind of activities can we expect from TOMORROW X TOGETHER in the future?
We had a team meeting about a month ago. This year marks our 8th debut anniversary, and every member still has burning passion. Healthy passion and ambition. At that moment I thought the members were really cool. And we all felt certain that we’ll go even higher than where we are now. I became convinced that TOMORROW X TOGETHER will become even more successful.
Q. When you look back at this interview far in the future, how do you think it will feel? How closely do you think the future TOMORROW X TOGETHER will match what you’re saying now?
As someone very interested in the K-pop idol industry, I’ve always admired second-generation groups that stayed together for a long time. I thought it would be nice if we could do the same—continuing to perform for fans, even occasionally. I said earlier that I’ve completed almost everything on my bucket list except one thing. I think this is something I can keep too. I’m confident.
It’s definitely not easy. But if it’s TOMORROW X TOGETHER, I think it’s possible. The members probably feel the same way. (laughs)
Q. Before we wrap up today, I want to ask: how many points would you give today’s shoot?
Whenever I’m asked to score myself, I never give a perfect score. I leave a little room because I always want to believe I can improve. For today’s shoot, I’d give it 4.5 out of 5.
Q. Then how could that remaining 0.5 point be filled?
Unless something moves me to tears or leaves me completely speechless, I don’t think I’ll easily give a perfect score. I don’t want to close things off by saying, “This is my absolute limit.” I want to leave room for possibility.
But I hope other people see me as a perfect 5.
Because honestly, inside I’m already thinking, “Today, I couldn’t have done any better than this.” (laughs)
